At the time, my YW president owned one of the only video stores in Spokane, WA. and for an activity, brought to her home a VCR. I remember how exciting it was to be able to watch a movie in your own home at your leisure. (Yes, I know I am dating myself ~ oh well.) We watched "Heaven Can Wait" with Warren Beatty. It was fabulous! The "new-fangled" invention called VCR amazed and astounded all in the group.
So....fast forward to my 13th birthday a couple months later. The "in" thing was renting a VCR from a video store for a few days. I remember doing this several times ~ hauling a giant, black suitcase home from the video store. At the time, VCRs were priced at or close to about $800, so renting one to bring home felt like winning the lottery. I was having a few friends over for my birthday party and they knew of my movie watching plans. I'm sure they anticipated me renting something cool to watch like Jaws or Superman or a scary movie. As an only, I didn't have the influence of older siblings to guide me in choosing what others considered to be "cool" movies. So, imagine my friends' surprise as I told them, in a genuinely excited voice, that we were watching Annie. By the looks on a few of their faces, (which I still get a laugh out of remembering), you could almost hear my coolness factor plummeting. Think the whistle noise when Wile E. Coyote falls off a cliff. I didn't care. I loved Annie. And to this day, I have an affinity for Annie. I love pulling out the music and having an "Annie jam session" on the piano. While it may be cheesy, guess what? The sun WILL come out tomorrow.

By the way, my other movie selection didn't help resurrect my reputation either or increase my "hipness." It was On Golden Pond. (For the record, I liked that movie quite a bit as well.) Who needs Friday the 13th?
Two classics! I would have loved the party. Thanks for sharing a fun memory.
