and driving up to Yakima to surprise our families made for a fun Mother's Day! Our nephew, Caleb had just returned from his mission in Germany and was giving his homecoming talk today. We had told everyone that we wouldn't be able to attend as Jay had committed us to chaperone the Stake Dance on Saturday until late and as their church starts at 11:30, that would make for too early of a morning for us.
Everyone understood why we weren't going to be able to come. Little did they know, we secretly planned on getting up early, driving the four hours to Yakima and arriving with just minutes to spare before church. As my alarm went off at 6 am this morning though, we did briefly contemplate not going......but only briefly.
So, we got up and got ready. My breakfast in bed became breakfast from the McDonald's drive through and we were off.
We made it to Yakima with 15 minutes to spare, quickly changed clothes and walked in. Our appearance got the desired effect of surprise from our family members. Jay's mom plays the organ and said that after the opening song was finished, she was getting off the bench and looked out and saw us and about fell off her chair.
We spent a fun afternoon having dinner with our families ~ one of those great moments when it's nice that quite a bit of our relatives live in the same city. It was fun for both Jay and I to be with our moms on Mother's Day. Neither one of us had spent a Mother's Day with our own moms in quite awhile! And their ward handed out beautiful, fragrant roses instead of the traditional chocolates that our ward hands out here in Salem.......much more "waist friendly!"
Though the drive was long and was at times, only manageable because Jay had sunflower seeds and a cup to spit the shells in, we had a fabulous time! Happy Mother's Day Mom and Carolyn ~ we love and appreciate all you do!
And I'm crossing my fingers that I get my breakfast in bed next Sunday.......
That was really cool! I'm glad that you had a chance to go up and spend the day with both of your moms!
